So Many Questions by Dani Goldberg
So Many Questions
“The thing about seeing the big picture and being self-aware is knowing that it’s not about you. It’s about the big picture. It’s not about you. It’s not. This is not about you.”
If you have ever been around me, you have heard this quote. It’s one of my all-time favorites by my idol, Jimmy Iovine. When he was 17, Jimmy was fired from The Record Plant for doing a lousy job sweeping. Eventually, he became the man behind Interscope Records, Beats, and artists such as Dr. Dre, Eminem, and Trent Reznor. I am using his words right now because they are explicit. Re-read it. Then read it a million times more. Jimmy’s statement is exceptionally fitting for what the world is going through in real-time.
So many things have led up to this defining moment of social distancing, obsessive hand-washing, hoarding toilet paper, homeschooling, online yoga/fitness classes, etc. It’s as if the whole world has been put on hold except for the news and social media. They have their battle happening, and both sides can’t produce fast enough. What’s real? What’s a conspiracy? Where does the truth lie? Times are changing, and it’s pretty terrifying. I’m always told to soften up for human consumption, but this is my process, and it’s not pretty, but reality can be cruel.
CHANGE. My mind keeps saying the word “CHANGE.” When that word pops up, I immediately think back to an article I had read about Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She said that it is too late to change; we can’t change everything because it all has become antiquated, and there’s just too much, it’s time to start over.
During this moment of solitude, I can’t help but feel as if The Universe has put the human race in a time out. Is this really such a bad idea? Even if it is sudden and unexpected. Is it possible that we, as a whole lost sight of the “big picture?” Jimmy was right; it’s not about you. It’s about the greater good, something more significant, possibly the human race and reconditions. Ruth hit the nail on the head; where it’s time to absorb the idea of pressing the proverbial reset button to re-enter society with a clean slate.
A slogan that has been run into the ground, “You only live once,” isn’t necessarily true if you go deep. You only die once. Every day when you open your eyes, it’s a gift and a redemption card to do things differently. As a collective, I ask you to take this time to put things back into a simple perspective. Understand that every day presents a different feeling, a different set information processed with a different set of eyes and ears. The only word that truly encompasses the vibe surrounding us is PATIENCE.
BE PATIENT.
Good things come to those who wait.
